Community

This one’s for the fans. Sport, and the incredible passion around it, has always been one of Geelong’s defining characteristics. The achievements of local athletes and clubs are a testament to the unwavering support of our community.

Learn how Geelong factories and mills established sports teams and leagues to give workers a way to relax and have fun. How the Try Boys Brigade and Girls Unity Club used sport to improve the lives of their members. And how 340 hectares at St Albans Stud supported two Melbourne Cup winners.

With this much passion, it’s no surprise that many of our athletes went on to leave a legacy for the next generation. The Community collection tells their stories too, featuring sportspeople like Cadel Evans, who created the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. As well as local boxers ‘Kid Young’ and George Bracken, who dedicated their later years to training young aspiring boxers.

Geelong has always been known for its sporting pride. We invite you to step into some of the most inspirational stories of community support and see for yourself how sport, and the people who get behind it, have the power to change lives forever.
